PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WITH READING AS A TOOL

If we take a short walk down man's history, we will notice something very intriguing. There were those that made things happen, those that watched things happen and those that asked, "what happened?" The role of those that make things happen is that of one interested in personal development. Let me give a definition of personal development before we move further. Personal development is a life long process — a way for people to assess their skills, talents and qualities and consider their aim in life and set goals in order to realise, maximize their potential and fully be in tune with their original self. Personal development is not only concerned with acquiring skills here and there but draws more to the process of "becoming." That is, to be transformed into the best version of one's self. It cuts across all facets of our lives and I've learnt that income rarely exceeds personal development. Sometimes, income takes a lucky jump but unless you learn

THE PROCESSES INVOLVED IN CREATIVE WRITING

From the previous classes, I'm sure we've come to know certain things about writing. So today, we'll step it up a bit. The word process could mean procedures or series of event that take place to produce a result. Now the processes of creative writing could be referred to as events or procedures carried out to produce a writing. Think about it, every thing has a process, whether in life, in education, in business and even cooking. I mean jollof rice doesn't just appear, there is process involved. From parboiling the rice, to frying the onion, and mixing the ingredients together, adding the rice later, and finally serving the plate of rice, it's all a process. Okay don't start salivating because we ain't cooking rice tonight but we'll cook some write ups. How about that?! Step 1: Preparing! This step involves conscious actions like active reading, imitation, research, reflecting and even playing. This is the time you decide on what exactly your

HOW TO IMPROVE/GROW YOUR WRITING SKILLS

So, first of all, I want everyone here to know that "writing" is not a waste of time and that choosing to write is choosing to speak for the voiceless. It is a worthy cause but not everyone would appreciate it. People may even look at you like you are wasting your time, but trust me, it is a good cause. Writing has been used to start wars, cause revolutions, etc. Such a powerful tool should not be under estimated. Here are some tips that should be adhered if we want to grow in the craft of writing: 1) For you to grow as a writer, or become better at writing, you must first have a desire to do so. There must be an intense desire to be a better writer, you must watch/read other writers and feel a burning sensation in your chest to grow and write better. I'm not trying to be dramatic when I say there must be a burning sensation in your chest. But then, it's not enough to just desire and dream. Your desire to be a better writer should be able to keep you up on some

HOW YOUR BRAIN AFFECTS YOUR BEHAVIOR

Our brain is kind of a big deal, isn't it? This is probably because it serves as a control center of our body. It's in charge of keeping your heart beating and lungs breathing and allowing you to move, feel and think. That's why it's a good idea to keep your brain at its highest working condition. Your brain actually affects everything that has to do with your body. Now, looking at how your brain affects your behaviour majorly boils down to the kind of food we eat because the foods you eat play a role in keeping your brain healthy and can improve specific mental tasks, such as memory and concentration. Secondly, the activities you engage yourself in like READING also has a way of impacting changes in the brain's neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that communicate messages between nerve cells in your brain. So the imbalance of this hormone in your brain can affect your MOOD, SLEEP, APPETITE, ANXIETY, etc. There are times we go to bed very sweet a

The truth is that a lot of people are really angry at the corruption that is happening in the corporate world - banks, industries, etc or even the government, for doing too much of the wrong things and not enough of the right things. Are you among this category? I believe a lot of us are and this has made a lot of people to become so angry because they have not been able to take care of their finances. We all know that life is tough, don't we? The truth and big question is "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?" Is it to keep complaining and moaning about the economy or blaming others? All of these won't secure your financial future. If you want wealth, you need to create it. You need to take charge of your future by taking control of your income, you need your own business and that is what this book is all about. The book is mind transforming, I can attest to that for sure. The truth is, this might be an economically hard time for the majority but for many en

WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE A PERSONAL LIBRARY?

To begin, let's look at at the phrase, "personal library." Quite explanatory, I must say. In simple terms, we can say personal library is your collection of books. Books you read some time ago or the ones you buy in order to read in the future, basically your own kind of books. So why is it necessary to have a personal library? Is it even necessary to have one? Let's see if we can find an answer with some scenarios in view. Here we go: Scenario 1: You're going through a situation in which you remember there was a book you read some time ago concerning the situation you are in at the moment. You look around your room, and the book is not there because you didn't think there was a need to buy a copy just in case. Scenario 2: You're always going over to your friend to borrow one book today and another, tomorrow. Let's say this friend of yours is quite generous, so he/she doesn't mind so long as you return the books in good shape. One day, som

REASONS FOR WRITING

Writing is the process of using symbols (letters of the alphabet, punctuation and spaces) to communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form. Writing is the fourth of the four language skills that include listening, speaking, reading, writing. Being a writer means writing for a reader as much as for yourself. This is a crucial step because it does something to your writing, it makes you more alert to the craft of language. So, in writing for a reader, your job is to arouse their imaginations because reading actually makes one to access the imaginations of the inner mind. Why should you even write? If you don’t know why you should write, here are a few reasons from MYLES MUNROE: 1. “The world is ruled by dead men.” Most of the ideas that govern our societies, cultures, laws, religions and philosophies today were first written down by those whose lives passed from this earth long ago. Writing gives you the power and ability to leave your thoughts beyond your grave. Ideas outliv

THE HALLELUJAH DIET!

Image
The first time I saw this book on a book store,I was really fascinated by the name, and then I became so inquisitive, didn't even get to the house before I started reading, lol!  The book is really an incredible juicy resource that has taught me a lot about how to eat more of living food rather than the usual cooked(dead) food that we've all been taught and accustomed to.  From various testimonies in this book, you will come to learn that all around the world, people from different walks of life have really been inspired to stop and reconsider their daily food consumption habits.  One of the main author of the book  'Malkmus' claims his change to a diet of raw fruits, vegetables, and carrot juice saved his life after a cancer  of more than 35 years ago which actually birthed this movement.   The Hallelujah Diet encouraged 85% raw and unprocessed plant-based food and 15% cooked plant-based food.  The authors also claim that meat can “get trapped” in our system,

PROCRASTINATION IN WRITING

Before we begin, let us define the word, "writer." A writer is a creator who plays with words. Creativity is something we got from our father, God. The whole earth came from a single thought. So, as a writer, you are a creator with thought flying in all the time. Have you ever wondered or asked yourself, "what if God had procrastinated his thinking? What will this earth have looked like? Procrastination, they say, is the stealer of time. It means putting what should be done today for tomorrow. One thing we need to know as writers is that one's mind generates ideas but do not hold them. Do you agree with this? We need to act on every idea that comes in, whether complete or not. Sometimes, procrastination and perfectionism often go hand in hand. Perfectionists tend to procrastinate because they expect so much from themselves. You don't need to know the complete piece. You only need to start. I will be sharing some reasons why writers procrastinate. These reas

THINK AND GROW RICH by Napoleon Hill

Image
Think and grow rich! Does it mean we have to actually grow to become rich? Think and grow rich was written by Napoleon Hill in 1937, and it contains about 15 chapters with about 13 steps towards Riches written in 14 chapters, while the fifteenth chapter gave real insight into what fears entails. The thirteen steps are; 1:Desires 2:Faith 3:Autosuggestion: The medium for influencing the subconscious mind 4:Specialized knowledge 5:Meditation: Workshop of the Mind 6:Organized planning: Crystallising of desires into action 7:Decision: the mastery of procrastination 8:Persistence; The sustained effort necessary to induce Faith 9:power of the master mind; Driving force 10:The mystery of Sex Transmutation 11:The subconscious Mind 12:The Brain; A broadcasting and receiving station for thoughts 13:The Sixth Sense; The door to the temple of wisdom From the 13 steps he analysed, permit me to throw a little more light on the first three. The First step towards riches is D

DON'T WASTE YOUR PAIN

Pain is simply a mental or emotional suffering. It can also be something or someone that makes us feel angry or annoyed. We all go through disappointments, set backs and loss. In as much as we don't pray for pain, it is a part of life but how we come out of it will determine our progress in life. It also determines the height of our achievements in life. Most times, we worry because  we cannot see the big puzzle of our life because they are not in place yet, it will only fit when everything comes together. Therefore we get troubled for what we are not sure of. Even in the pain you have to trust that the design of your life will work out for your good. In those tough times its easy to let your pain overwhelm you, but if you are overwhelmed by your pain, you are wasting it. Your pains can be maximised to produce a great result. I will tell us a story before we proceed. One of my mentors who Founded an NGO in Lagos named "Safermom" her name is Jaiyeoba.  Jaiyeoba h

HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE by dale carnegie

Image
The book was published in the year 1936 and has been revised a couple of times after then. This book was inspired during one of Dale's courses in which he trained those in corporate firms and those in business. His courses revolved around self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Alright, so this is not one of those books on how to control people and make them do what you want or dance to your tune. Not exactly! So what is it really about? You may ask. Let's find out. The central idea or theme of the book is to build and improve human relations. It is actually a self-help or self-improvement book. This means it gives you helpful tips on how you can become better. So this book is geared towards helping you improve your relationship with people you work with, live with and those you come across on a regular basis. The book is divided into four(4) parts and each part has its own sub-chapters and principles. This might s

THE FIVE PILLARS OF FICTION WRITING

Writing in itself is an art and as such a writer needs to be proficient. Talent is not enough in the art of writing. One needs to be skilled when it comes to writing, you need to give your audience a strong emotional experience that can keep their eyes fixed on your story. The five pillars that can bring about this emotional experience are: 1: Setting or what we call the story world. 2: Theme or the meaning of your story. 3: Characters: that is the players on the stage of your story. 4: Plot:the plethora of actions the characters take or series of events that takes place in the life of the characters. Then finally. 5: Style:This is simply your own way of combining the earlier mentioned keys together. It’s the way you express yourself, in humour, in tone, in words.   Now let's talk about the story world This is the place where your story takes place. It ranges from the whole universe to your continent to your country to your state, etc.   Infact in fiction, you can

THE OBSTACLE IS THE WAY by Ryan Holiday

I call this book special because its way of instructing is a bit different from the conventional books This book was written by Ryan Holiday as earlier said Let's delve in I'll start my class with an old Zen story, there was a king whose people had grown soft and felt entitled, he decide to shake them a little and teach them a lesson, so he took a big stone and placed it at the middle of the road and hid himself in a road side bush. He observed people’s disposition when they got to where the stone was. A lot of then got there and cursed the king and turned back, some other  people got there and tried to push it but they couldn't so they too turned back. For the whole day a similar occurrence happened with all turning back. The following day the king went there to keep watch again and this time he saw a lone peasant walk by who looked at the stone in the middle of the road for a while, then he tried a whole lot to move it but his strength failed him. He too

EDUCATION VERSUS SCHOOLING

Image
According to history, there has been this unending controversy for years between these two close relatives, "education and schooling" ever since the times communities started developing. Education is really what everyone needs. It is compulsorily important and should be an indispensable part of the life of anyone who wants to continue on the path of learning even after we might have left the walls of the institution. Webster defines education as "knowledge and development resulting from an instructive process" but Webster’s dictionary defines schooling as "the process of being taught, such as in a school." Education improved as the communities developed but no one knows when schooling began. Education is the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. Educational methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training and directed research. Education frequently takes place under
